Beschreibung
The church of Santa Maria del Campo is in the heart of the old part of Ceglie del Campo and its baroque frontage dominates the square. There is documentary evidence of a religious community in Ceglie del Campo under the archbishopric of Bari since the 12th century. There are still two main places of worship dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ceglie: the mother church of Madonna del Campo and the church of Madonna di Buterrito near the cemetery. The church was built in 1776 to the design of the Bari architect Giuseppe Gimma (1747-1829). The façade extends in an undulating manner over two levels, and faces the church yard in front. The inside is defined by a central area with two side chapels: the one on the left displays the fresco of the Madonna del Campo that gave rise to the cult; the one on the right houses a modern statue of Saint Joseph. In the centre, there are the pendentives supporting the cupola above them. The small Cappellina del Rosario chapel is worthy of note. It features a complicated floor made of Neapolitan majolica at the end of the 18th century.
