In the centre of the Carrassi district there is an unusual church dedicated to Bari's patron saint, who is much venerated by Russian orthodox Christians. The well known Russian architect A. V. Sciusev was entrusted with the design of the church and it was built in the architectural style of Pskov and Novgorod. During the First World War, building work was not suspended and before the start of the Russian Revolution the church had welcomed over 200 Russian pilgrims. The church was completed in the 1920s. During the 1917 Revolution, Bari's Russian church had a difficult time. The pilgrimages to the remains of Saint Nicholas stopped and in 1937 the architectural complex was sold by Prince N. Zhevahov, the Bari representative of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, to Bari city council. From that moment, the Russian church stopped being Russian property. Only in 1998, only after long negotiations between the Patriarchate of Moscow and the local authority, it was possible to open up the territory of the church to a representative of the Patriarchate of Moscow. The outside is dominated by the marvellous cupola covered in green bricks in classic Russian style. The interiors are decorated with decorations that are clearly Russian orthodox. In the entrance there is a bronze statue of Saint Nicholas.
