1925-1935

Built between 1925 and 1935, the Apulian Aqueduct building, designed by the engineer Cesare Brunetti of Ravenna, rises over the Murat Quarter with its majestic architecture taking its inspiration from Apulian Romanesque. It was commissioned by the engineer Gaetano Postiglione - head of the Acquedotto Pugliese management company - both as a monumental celebration of the historic establishment of regular regional water supply, and also to house the technical and administrative offices of the body. The exterior of the building, rising four storeys faced with slabs of Trani stone, features a number of elements clearly inspired in the local architectural heritage, religious and otherwise. The huge dentilled corbels supporting the balcony on the corner of Via Cognetti with Via Fiume, as well as the balcony over the entrance doorway, are reminiscent of some of the decorative and architectural features of the façade of the Church of Santa Maria del Casale in Brindisi, one of the most important places of worship in the region. The interior decoration and furnishings were by designed by Duilio Cambellotti, who gave the building its own particular style, rigorous and joyful at the same time, making it a "monument" to water. Cambellotti's work was carried out in various phases and included the planning of a number of rooms, the pictorial decoration, furnishings, flooring, the lighting system, but also the door knobs and carpets for the function rooms on the first floor and the Chairman's apartment on the second floor. In the working areas and private apartments of the building, Cambellotti treats his favourite themes, such as women's work, fountains and horses watering at troughs, creating interesting combinations of Apulian Romanesque and Art Deco. The huge range of furniture items, almost all still completely intact, stand as a testimony to the inventiveness of the designer and the skills of his craftsmen. The desks for the Board Room and the Chairman's Study are original both in form and decoration. The first features an elegant oval design and intarsia work, resting on a base of arches, the latter an imposing form with a semi-cylindrical central section clearly inspired in Romanesque sculpted marble pulpits. The intarsia inlay in wood and mother of pearl features schematic representations of olive trees, women with amphorae and cityscapes of Bari. The Apulian Aqueduct building in Bari is still the headquarters of the water authority, but is now open to the public for guided visits, temporary exhibition and cultural activities.
