Originally the lighthouse emitted a steady beam of red light to mark the entrance to the port for vessels. It was built in local stone in 1879 at the northern end of the pier acting as a breakwater for the Port di Bari. The lighthouse was built on the Molo Borbonico following the shipwreck of a sailing ship which failed to clear the pier in a storm, tragically running aground on the coast.
