13th-16th centuries

The old main church was built in the mid-13th century and then renovated during the course of the 14th century by the Angevins, who brought with them French Benedictine artists already working in the new Gothic style. In the 16th century the building, considered outdated and in poor condition, was demolished except for the bell tower. It was decided that the design for the most important religious building in the town should be in the splendid new "style of the century", in other words the classic Renaissance style. The "new" main church had a Greek-cross floor plan over which rose an elegant dome of clearly Renaissance inspiration. Among the best conserved artworks in the interior is the 14th century baptismal font originally housed in the nearby Church of San Rocco and an 18th century noble family's chapel. The church also contains 17th century paintings by Carlo Rosa. The façade was renovated in the early 20th century in the neo-Romanesque style, in other words following the artistic canons popular at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries which saw a return of the Apulian Romanesque style.
