VIII century - XII century

From Piazza Mercantile square, following the Muraglia city walls to their furthest point, one reaches the imposingly monumental buildings of Santa Scolastica, some of the most beautiful and picturesque edifices in the city. These include a 16th century Aragonese bastion (erected after the demolition of a medieval church dedicated to Saints John and Paul) and the ancient monastery, site of the city’s archaeological museum together with the archaeological area of San Pietro. An entrance within an embrasure at the foot of the bastion leads to a route which allows the visitor to observe part of the rich archaeological stratification of the site which ranges from the Bronze Age (2000 BC) to the Byzantine and Medieval eras, passing through the Greek and Roman periods. The remains of the old city walls, dating back to the end of the 4th century BC are among the most striking historical relics on display. It is also possible to see the ruins of a pre-historic village and a Peucetian and Greek burial ground. Since October 2014 the museum has made improvements by adding new exhibition areas and its reorganisation programme is still in progress. http://www.provincia.ba.it/home_page/struttura_e_organizzazione/00001096_MUSEO_ARCHEOLOGICO_PROVINCIALE.html
